LOYISO Nkohla-Mabandla’s widow, Nyameka is not impressed by the decision of her husband’s suspected killers to apply for bail.
The three suspected killers, Mziyanda Mdlungu(38), Zukisa Tshabile (38) and Mzubanzi Chulayo (41) appeared in the Athlone Magistrates Court on Thursday, 15 February.
Mdlungu and Chulayo indicated to the court that they wanted to proceed with their bail applications, while Tshabile abandoned bail.
“It is disgusting that you have criminals who have killed a person wasting the court’s time wanting bail. I’m glad that accused number one has abandoned his bail application. Still, I don’t understand why criminals in this country feel like it’s okay to kill and after that waste the court’s time applying for bail,” said Nyameka.
Nyameka said the fact that the killers didn’t want her husband, but her, shocks her as they are a young family with young kids.

“For me, when I come here every time, I’m grappling to understand why you would decide to kill two young parents who are trying to make a living for their children and are also trying to uplift the community,” said Nyameka.
Loyiso was murdered on 17 April 2023 while he was addressing a community meeting in Philippi. Since then, cops have managed to track the suspected killers, while the suspected mastermind, Thobani Maxengana died in jail cells in East London on 16 November 2023 after he was arrested the previous day.
In November, it was disclosed in court that Loyiso’s murder was pre-meditated. The prosecutor told the court that the suspects together with the deceased mastermind held a meeting where they planned to murder Loyiso and Nyameka.
Call records, bank transactions and more information secured by the cops suggest that the suspects were paid R20 000 each for their roles in murdering Loyiso.
Bail application for Mdlungu and Chulayo is set for 4 March, while Tshabile has been remanded in custody and will return on 28 March.
