MZIYANDA Mdlungu, a man suspected to have taken part in the murder of Loyiso Nkohla-Mabandla, appeared in the Athlone Magistrates Court on Monday, 20 November.
The court heard that Mdlungu was the one who drove a getaway car of the men who shot and killed Loyiso.
Reading the charge sheet, the prosecutor said Mdlungu and others held a meeting a day before the murder of Loyiso.
“There was a meeting, and the accused attended this meeting. The meeting was convened by a person called Thobani Maxengana,” said the prosecutor.
He said that Maxengana died in a jail cell in East London on Thursday, 16 November, after he was arrested the previous day.
“You received a call that you go pick up the gunmen after they shot Loyiso, you went to the scene, but the shooters had already left the scene. You had another meeting with the shooters after the shooting incident," the prosecutor said.
"The accused before the court is the one who called the mastermind Mr Thobani Maxengana and told him that they had finished the job. In May 2023, the suspect received an amount of R20 000 from the mastermind Mr Thobani Maxengana and the money was accepted by you."

Loyiso’s widow, Nyameka KwaLunga Mabandla, couldn't hold back her tears during the proceedings.
After the court session, she highlighted that she knew both the accused in court on Monday and the deceased Maxengana.
“When Loyiso lost her mother two weeks before his death, both the accused and the deceased came to our house to console us. They attended the church services that happened at our home, and it's shocking that they're the ones who are behind the death of my husband,” said Nyameka.
Loyiso’s friend, Masizole Mnqasela, who was at the court to support Nyameka and the family, said the suspects must not be granted bail.
Mdlungu said he will be applying for bail, and the case has been postponed to 1 December for bail application.
