Over the past weekend, the Western Cape province has been hit by heavy downpours and strong winds, causing flooding, road closures and mudslides.

Six children trapped in three houses in Strand were rescued on Monday 25 September, while disaster management teams have confirmed the search for three people who are missing.

Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning MEC Anton Bredell reported that one person was swept away in Groot Brakrivier, while two people were reported missing in Villiersdorp.

Disruptive rainfall was also observed in parts of the Eastern Cape, with the SA Weather Service predicting that disruptions will worsen with increased flooding.

Eskom suspended load shedding in these flood-affected provinces to restore electricity safety after flooding caused widespread damage to infrastructure.

The entire country, however, is set to endure stage 3 load shedding until further notice.

Eskom had initially intended for load shedding to be suspended for the entirety of the long weekend, with rolling blackouts to restart on Tuesday, 26 September but this joyride was short-lived.

News broke on Sunday 24 September that the utility witnessed the failure of three generating units which saw the effective return of load shedding.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorised the special investigating unit to probe the City of Tshwane’s R295 million tender to refurbish the Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Plant.

This is the same tender that businessman Edwin Sodi is linked to. The probe comes after 20 people died because of a cholera outbreak in Hammanskraal in May.

On Friday, 23 September Gauteng police confirmed the arrest of seven suspects in connection with the kidnapping of a Wits University student who was reported missing earlier last week. It was alleged that the suspects used a dating website to lure the victim into a trap.

The weekend was not all that bad as the streets of Joburg were kept busy with the much anticipated DSTV Delicious International Food & Music Festival on Saturday 24 September and Sunday 25 September.

As promised the two day event saw a rather improved and stress-free festival this year with international acts like TEMS and Maxwell gracing the stage.

The crowed even had a wowing surprise performance when Zakes Bantwini who performed alongside Clash of the Choirs brought and Bucie Nkomo.

Other performances included  Morda, Oscar Mbo, Myztro and DJ Maphorisa.

At the same time, the country celebrated Heritage Day on Sunday.

The Bakoena Royal House at Monontsha Village in QwaQwa, Free State celebrated Heritage Day with an intensive educational session on how initiation should be conducted.
