SIX children were rescued after they were trapped in a flooded house in Strand, Cape Town on Monday, 25 September.
This came after the Western Cape was hit by violent floods and storms since yesterday.
City of Cape Town disaster management spokeswoman Charlotte Powell said the kids had been rescued and were safe.
“Rescue workers have rescued six children trapped in three different houses in Strand and taken them to the fire station in Strand. There are reports of a house in Sir Lowry’s Pass Village which is about to collapse. The residents have been evacuated. Structural engineers have been appointed to deal with the situation,” Powell said.

She said several areas have been affected by the floods. The worst affected areas include Taiwan, DM Section, France, QQ Section, Green Point, Qandu Qandu, as well as SST informal settlements in Khayelitsha.
Morkel Cottages informal settlements in Strand, Ekuphumleni and Du Noon, are some of the areas affected by the floods. In Mfuleni, the informal settlements of Shukushukuma and Covid-19 along Old Faure have been badly affected. Residents of Sir Lowry’s Pass Village, Rasta Camp, Riemvasmaak and 7de Laan Sandvlei Macassar also reported that the water flooded their homes.
Formal houses in areas such as Durbanville, Bo-Kaap, Schaapkraal, Bellville South, Belhar, Sandvlei Macassar, Strand, Gordons Bay and Knorhoek have been affected.
“The city and relevant external agencies are working closely together as part of the Disaster Coordination Team to monitor and manage the impact of the bad weather over the past 24 hours,” Powell said.
In the Overberg area, the N2 was closed at Botrivier after a bridge was washed away. The municipality of Overburg said that several roads in the area were closed.
”N2 is closed at Botrivier. Provincial Traffic is diverting traffic on the N2 at Swellendam and Villiersdorp. Stanford Hermanus road is closed. Rescue work is underway at Stanford by Overstrand Fire and NSRI. Bredasdorp R319 is closed Swellendam and Struisbaai, R316 Arniston closed, R316 Napier Van Brakel at risk, R317 may be closed any minute,” the municipality wrote on its Facebook page.
Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has called on residents to stay at home and avoid unnecessary travel.
