FIVE-TIME Grammy award-winning scathamiya group Ladysmith Black Mambazo has partnered with Red Cross to raise awareness about floods and natural disasters in KZN.

The group is doing that under their late founder, Joseph Shabalala’s foundation called Bhekizizwe Joseph Shabalala Association.

They have organised a 10 kilometre fun run from Max Lifestyle to Tehuis in Umlazi, south of Durban on Saturday, 29 July.

Black Mambazo co-leader Thulani Shabalala told Daily Sun he and other members will also take part in a fun run.

“We have realised that Umlazi is one of the areas that always suffer the most during floods and other natural disasters.

"We decided to come along with the Red Cross to raise awareness about avoiding damage instead of coming with them to respond to natural disasters where there is damage," Thulani said.

He said they don't want to see people responding to those damages.

"But we want to raise awareness and urge people to check if they are living in suitable places.”

Thulani, the son of the late Joseph Shabalala, said they wanted residents to consult the soil inspectors to check if the land they have built their houses could handle floods.

"We encourage those who have built houses where they might be easily attacked by floods to relocate and avoid the worst. We are doing this because we honour our father Joseph Shabalala’s wish to help people. We will also be fundraising to help flood victims,” he said.

Thulani said during Women’s Day on 9 August, their foundation will partner with Mpofana Local Municipality to commemorate women living with disabilities at Mooi River Bruntville Stadium.

“We are also working with the Red Cross and Zulu King Misuzulu’s wife, Queen Ntokozo Mayisela,” he said.

In February, the foundation hosted Bhekizizwe Joseph Shabalala Marathon in Ladysmith to honour the late Joseph in his hometown of KZN Midlands.

“I also ran and finished that race. I will also run and finish the one happening at Umlazi because I normally participate in many races,” he said.
