Big honour for the late Joseph Shabalala!

FIVE-TIME Grammy Award- winning icathamiya group, Lady smith Black Mambazo, wants to honour and remember their late leader Joseph Shabalala in style.

The group has dedicated this week as the Joseph Shabalala Week and will host masterclasses, have memorial lectures, exhibit their accolades and close off the festivities with a marathon in his honour.

Shabalala died in 2020 at the age of 79 after his group had already collaborated with big names in the world such as Michael Jackson, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s manager Xolani Majozi told SunBuzz the group is honouring the legacy of its founder Shabalala in his home town of Ladysmith, KZN.

“We started on Monday, 6 February, where we conducted master classes at Dr Joseph Shabalala Secondary School in Ladysmith.

“Yesterday, 7 February, we hosted masterclasses at Kirkintulloch and Nhlonhlweni primary schools,” he said.

Majozi said the Homeless hitmakers will go to the exhibition of their accolades at Ladysmith Town Hall tomorrow, 8 February.

“On Friday, a memorial lecture will be delivered by Dr Sipho Sithole at Ladysmith Town Hall. On Saturday, the a the marathon to honour late Joseph Shabalala and it is called Dr BJ Shabalala Marathon named after him. The marathon willwill start from Watersmith and end at the Ladysmith Indoor Sport Centre,” he said. The group is now co-led by Joseph Shabalala’s sons, Thulani Shabalala, Sibongiseni Shabalala and Thami Shabalala.

Joseph Shabalala died when he was already retired from music but his name is always praised because of his unique and amazing work he did in putting his group on the map when he was still fit.

His group is continuing to fly the Mzansi flag higher as it is continuing with his legacy and still travel overseas to perform like they did when he was still alive.

They are also continuing with his big wish to groom other young isicathamiya groups through Ladysmith Black Mambazo mobile academy.
