SHARON Legwai (41) from Mamelodi East in Tshwane is devastated after her seven-year-old son Thagalo drowned in a small lake on Thursday, 6 July.

She told Daily Sun her son left home on Thursday to play with her friends but never came back home.

On Friday morning, 7 July, she discovered that her son had drowned in a local lake.

His body was retrieved from the water by the police divers.

Sharon said that she hoped they would find him alive.

“I am so heartbroken. I don’t even know what to say,” she said.

“I thought that maybe he would return home, that maybe someone saw him and said they would bring him home, but that never happened,” said Sharon.

She said she had hoped her son would grow and look after her.

“He was very young. This is so hard for me,” Sharon said.

Councillor Joel Kgomotso Masilela said they are saddened by what happened.

“This is not the first case someone lost their life like this. Two years ago, when we had floods, a young person lost his life not far from here,” he said.

He said the government should be held accountable.

“On numerous occasions, we have been speaking to them that the relocation of our people into permanent residents would be important,” he said.

Gauteng police spokeswoman Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, said an inquest docket was opened.

“The boy was allegedly playing with friends at a water stream in Nellmapius when he drowned. The police were informed about the incident today and immediately activated the rescue team to search for the boy. Unfortunately, his body was recovered in the stream,” she said.
