Among the recipients were Dr Abubakar Ebrahim Dangor, Dr Vhahangelwe Masindi, Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis and Springboks captain, Siya Kolisi.

The ceremony was held at Sefako Makgatho Guesthouse in Tshwane on Friday, 28 April.

Ellis and Kolisi were bestowed the Order of Ikhamanga in gold.

This order is awarded to South Africans who have excelled in the field of arts, culture, literature, music, journalism and sport.

Mfundi Vundla of Generations fame received the Order of Ikhamanga in silver for his sterling work in the TV and film industry in Mzansi.

Ramaphosa said Vundla's body of work in the field of arts was indisputable proof of the value of consistency.

Northern Cape Sport, Arts and Culture’s late official, Kgomotso Thomas, posthumously received the Order of Mendi in silver.

He was honoured for his bravery after he saved two Sol Plaatje University students from drowning in George, Western Cape, four years ago.

Ramaphosa also paid tribute to US actor, singer and activist, Harry Belafonte, who died two days before the ceremony.

“On Wednesday 26 April, we received the sad news that Harry Belafonte, a towering figure in the civil rights movement and a great friend of the South African people, had passed away,” said Ramaphosa.
