KHAYELITSHA councillor from Ward 98, Anele Gabuza, says he knows some of the eight people who were shot and killed in Khayelitsha, Cape Town on Wednesday morning, 17 April.

Gabuza said some of the dead were amaphara (junkies) used to rob people in front of his office, near a shopping centre in his ward.

Speaking at the scene of the incident, the councillor didn’t mince his words regarding what he knew about the dead.

“I know some of them. They are amaphara. They used to rob people of their phones, and they are known around here. I would sometimes see them robbing people of their phones close to my office. Sometimes, they would break into people’s homes and steal people’s stuff around kasi.

"This shooting could be in connection with criminal activities. It's either they have shot one another among themselves over their disagreements or they were shot by a person whom they had stolen from,” the councillor said.

The councillor said even the two women who were killed in the shooting were always part of the group.

“They were always part of the group. I don’t know if they were their girlfriends or not, but they were always together,” he said.

A mother, Nolubabalo Ncanywa, said her son, Yibanathi Ncanywa (30), was among the dead people.

She said that even though her son was taking drugs, she was unhappy about how he died.

Phumla Nkomana, a mother who lost two sons in the shooting, is still trying to come to terms with her loss.

She said Nceba Nkomana (41) and Collen Nkomana (40), together with his girlfriend and their cousin, were all killed inside their home.

Phumla said she doesn't know why her children were killed.

“They were all killed inside Nceba’s house. We were also called to the scene. We don’t know what happened,” she said.

Police spokesman Colonel Andre Traut said detectives are chasing the leads to find the killers.

“Preliminary investigations into the multiple murders in Harare this morning led detectives to believe that two incidents that preceded the one in Ncumu Street could possibly be linked. At about 2pm, an adult male and his adult girlfriend were shot and killed In Feza Street Harare, and shortly after that, a 35-year-old male was shot and killed not far from the first scene.

“Three hours later, the murders in Ncumu Street were committed, possibly by the same suspects,” said Traut.
