THE Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) will investigate an alleged assault by some of its officers in Bergbron, Ranburg.
This was said by JMPD spokesman Superintendent Xolani Fihla, on Saturday 28 October.
Fihla said they were made aware of a very worrying incident involving an alleged assault by JMPD officers on a motorist in Bergbron, Randburg.
He said the incident happened on Friday evening, 27 October, at Gordon Road & 5th Street. Fihla said a male motorist, who was involved in an accident with another motorist, was approached by a group of officers who argued with him about his vehicle's expired licence disc and the cops wanted to impound his car, which he refused.
"The argument escalated and led to an altercation between the motorist and an officer, which was followed by an alleged assault by the officers on the motorist, who sustained injuries to his head and upper body," Fihla said.
"The JMPD is aware of the gravity of the matter. To effectively resolve this incident, a thorough and impartial investigation is essential," he said.
Fihla further said that the JMPD encourages the motorist to approach the JMPD's internal affairs unit to thoroughly investigate the situation, determine the facts and hold those responsible accountable.
