AT least five people were killed while several others were injured in a car crash on the M1 South near the Athol Oaklands exit on Monday afternoon, 23 October.

The incident happened while police were transporting awaiting trial prisoners. The accident involved three vehicles, a Nissan NP300 police van, a Ford Ranger and a Mercedes-Benz.

JMPD spokesman Superintendent Xolani Fihla said: "The Nissan had six occupants, five of whom died in the accident.

"A female passenger in the Nissan suffered serious injuries. The police vehicle was transporting prisoners when the accident happened." 

Fihla said that the Ford Ranger had four occupants, a man, a woman and two children, the occupants were all seriously injured.

"The driver of the Mercedes was the only occupant and didn't sustain any injuries. The cause of the accident is being investigated by the SAPS," Fihla said.
