THE thought of seeing himself behind bars was too much for him.
The Toyota Quantum taxi driver from Ekurhuleni was overwhelmed by fear after he crashed into a Mercedes-Benz in a head-on collision, which led to him abandoning his vehicle and fleeing the accident scene.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, 18 October, on Reverend RTJ Namane Road.
Lieutenant-Colonel Kelebogile Thepa confirmed the accident.
"The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department Officers attended a crash involving two motor vehicles and the driver of another vehicle was nowhere to be found," he said.
Thepa said while monitoring the two-way radio, officers heard about a motor vehicle collision on the Reverend RTJ Namane road and they responded.

Upon arrival, they discovered a white Toyota Quantum minibus taxi severely damaged from the head-on collision with a white Mercedes-Benz sedan.
"It was established that, immediately after the crash, the taxi driver who was alone in the minibus when the crash occurred ran away," she said.
Thepa said the Emergency Services were summoned to the scene, tending to two male patients from the Mercedes-Benz, aged 23 and 55, who had suffered serious injuries. Both individuals were subsequently transported to Thembisa Hospital for medical treatment.
A case of failing to wait for officials to arrive at an accident scene, coupled with reckless and negligent driving was registered at the Rabasotho Police Station in Thembisa.
Thepa said the minibus taxi is impounded at the EMPD Kempton Park yard for safekeeping and the hunt is on for the taxi driver who fled the scene.
