TWO men went to perform a ritual cleansing in a river.

What happened

When the inyanga and the man had finished their cleansing, they decided to swim, but they didn't know that they were called by death.

The two men, aged 23 and 27, were swept away in KwaDukuza in KZN on Wednesday, 17 January.

Search and rescue try to find men

IPSS Search and Rescue spokesman Paul Herbs said two adult men were reported to have been swept away by the Mvoti River in KwaDukuza.

"According to reports, the two men, aged 23 and 27, got into trouble during a cleansing ceremony and were swept into the river," he said.

He said the IPSS Search and Rescue, KDM Marine Safety, Durban police search and rescue and Umhlali K9 search and searched along the river for most of the day.

Badul Air also provided air support to the search and rescue teams.

"Unfortunately, the men couldn't be found, and the search had to be called off for the time being due to poor weather conditions," he said.

Police launch investigation

KZN police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that KwaDukuza cops have launched an investigation after two people were reported to have drowned in the Mdloti River on Wednesday, 17 January.

"Police responded to a report of a drowning and on arrival realised that a traditional healer had gone into the river to perform a cleansing ritual. According to reports, the two victims, aged 23 and 27, decided to swim after the cleansing but got into trouble and drowned," he said.
