THE Zulu traditional prime minister and IFP founder, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi (94), has been hospitalised.

Buthelezi was admitted for routine tests and treatment for prolonged back pain and underwent a procedure for back pain management.

He was discharged and readmitted again to an undisclosed hospital on Monday, 24 July.

His spokeswoman, Liezl van der Merwe, confirmed that Buthelezi was hospitalised.

“It has come to my attention that rumours are circulating regarding the ill health of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.

“I wish to confirm that Prince Buthelezi has been hospitalised but is not critically ill. He was admitted for routine tests and treatment for prolonged back pain and underwent a small procedure for back pain management," she said.

She said although Buthelezi was discharged, he, unfortunately, needed to be readmitted for further treatment and recovery.

“The nation will be kept abreast as and when necessary. A request has been made that well-wishers refrain from visiting, as a speedy recovery depends on rest,” van der Merwe.

In 2022, Buthelezi, also a Member of Parliament, was hospitalised after he felt unwell when he experienced high blood pressure while he defeated Covid-19 twice.

This happened as King Misuzulu was recently hospitalised in Eswatini for poison suspicions after his senior Induna Douglas Xaba died under suspicion of alleged poisoning.
