A MAN from Mpumalanga has allegedly shot and killed his lover after a heated argument.

The fatal shooting incident happened on Friday, 16 February in Komatipoort.

According to Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the suspect (48) was arrested on Saturday, 17 February after handing himself over to the police.

Mdhluli said according to a report, the suspect made a surprise visit at the residential place of the woman (46).

"The woman's relative is said to have left the woman and the suspect arguing when she left home. The deceased, who was employed as a Sars official, was preparing for work on Friday, 16 February.

"When the relative returned in the afternoon, she discovered that the door to the flat where they reside was surprisingly locked," said Mdhuli.

He said the neighbours tried to assist in gaining entry inside after suspecting that something sinister could have happened to the woman.

"It was during this time when they discovered that the woman was motionless, and she had sustained some gunshot wounds and was inside in a pool of blood.

"The police as well as the paramedics were summoned to the scene and upon arrival, the woman was unfortunately certified dead," said Mdhluli.

He said a murder case was opened and police immediately began with their investigation.

"At the time of his arrest, police managed to recover a firearm with its serial numbers filed off.

"The firearm will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether it was not previously used in the commission of crime elsewhere. Hence at this stage, police can't rule out possibilities of adding more charges against the suspect as the investigation continues," said Mdhuli.

He said the suspect has been charged with murder and is expected to appear in the Komatipoort Magistrates Court on Monday, 19 February.

The provincial commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela urged members of the public not to resort to violence when they come across some challenges in their relationships.

"They should make use of available resources in place which include social workers and faith-based organisations.

"This incident once again shows that the proliferation of firearms remains a challenge, especially on violent crimes. We hope that justice will be served for the victim as well as her family," said the general.
