POLICE in Cape Town are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder after a cop was murdered on Sunday night, 17 September.
Sergeant Themba Mphalala (37) from Mfuleni was off-duty visiting his friend in Khayelitsha at the time of his untimely death.
While the two were seated inside the cop’s car outside the friend’s home on Cwayayi Street, a Toyota Quantum taxi stopped at about 9.45pm and fired shots at them.
Sergeant Mphalala died instantly on the scene, but his friend was rushed to the hospital where he is battling for his life.
Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie said the friends were approached by two gunmen who started firing shots at them.
“The suspects opened fire and hit both occupants several times. The policeman succumbed on the scene to multiple injuries, and his friend was rushed to hospital for medical treatment,” said Pojie.

The incident happened while cops are still investigating the murder of a law enforcement officer Zamikhaya Kwinana who was murdered in Nyanga on 4 August.
Kwinana was a passenger in a marked law enforcement vehicle driving in Nyanga just after 8pm when unknown gunmen fired shots at the vehicle.
He was shot in the head, and when his colleagues realised he had been hit, they sped off to Heideveld Day Hospital.
Unfortunately, when they arrived at the hospital the officer was declared dead as he had sustained gunshot wounds to the head.
