THE Hawks in Cape Town have arrested a teenager (17) in connection with the alleged murder of an off-duty police officer in Philippi East.
The Hawks' spokeswoman in the Western Cape, Warrant Officer Zinzi Hani, said the officer was murdered while on leave from Pretoria to Cape Town.
“The Bellville-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation Team arrested a 17-year-old suspect on Friday, 10 November for his alleged involvement in the murder of a police officer in Philippi East in 2022.
"An off-duty police officer, who was stationed at the Local Criminal Record Centre in Pretoria at the time of his death, was gunned down while on leave in Cape Town," said Hani.
During the attack, the deceased officer was robbed of his service pistol. The suspect is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrates Court on Monday, 13 November in connection with the murder.

Meanwhile, a 59-year-old suspect, Phindile Sonyabashe, surrendered to police on Saturday, 4 November 2023 for alleged involvement in the murder of a police officer in Mfuleni. The police officer, who was stationed at Harare cop shop, was off duty at the time of the incident.
The incident occurred at about 1.30pm. It's alleged that the suspect and the victim had an altercation on Friday, 3 November as a result of which the suspect stabbed the victim. He appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrates Court on Monday, 6 and also on Thursday, 9 November.
The case was postponed to 15 November 2023 for the suspect to apply for bail, and he has been kept in jail.
