A YEAR after her daughter lost half of her finger at school, a mother claims she still doesn’t know what happened.
The 31-year-old mum from Umlazi, south of Durban, said she was told her daughter (6) was injured after her finger got caught in a gate at school.
She said her daughter told her a teacher had instructed her to stand at the gate right before home time.
“She said the teacher pulled the gate to close it and it hit her hand, chopping part of the finger off. They then rushed her to hospital and I was only called when she had already been admitted,” she said.
The mum said nobody gave her an explanation.
“It was only my child who told me anything. The teacher and the principal are not telling me anything and they don’t want to take responsibility. Instead, they are rude to me and even chase my mother away when she goes to inquire,” she said.
She said when she asked the principal and teacher if they saw the missing piece of the finger, they acted like it was nothing to worry about.
She said she decided to take her child to a different school. She wants the KZN education department to compensate her. Department spokesman Kwazi Mthethwa said: “We encourage her to report the matter to the circuit manager.”
