GAUTENG education has placed a spotlight on mining at township schools.
The department has introduced another specialised school, Raymond Mhlaba Maths, Science and ICT School of Specialisation, focusing on mining.
It was launched on Thursday, 12 October, in Tshepisong, near Roodepoort.
This will be the 29th specialised school introduced by the department to ensure that the skills gap in the country is filled.
According to Gauteng education department spokesman Steve Mabona, the school aims to attract residents of Tshepisong who are eager to improve living conditions in and around the area.
Mabona said the fact that the school exists in this area holds great significance because mining operations are widespread here.
He said that mining equipment enterprises are established within the community, with many of the parents in the area being employed in these mining companies.

With this school, the department, according to Mabona, wants to expand the perspective on the mining industry as a multifaceted industry requiring a diverse range of professionals.
"This includes not only miners but also engineers and technicians," he said.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane praised and emphasised the significant role the school will play in the community.
“Raymond Mhlaba marks the 29th School of Specialisation to be inaugurated, exemplifying the progressive strides of the Gauteng Department of Education.
"We are moving forward with a clear vision of reimagining the future for our learners, where they can showcase their talents and access top-quality education right in their community,” said Chiloane.
