ELECTRICITY Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says the power generation system is performing well this festive season.
He said this on Thursday, 21 December during a media briefing on the implementation of the Energy Action Plan.
The minister said Eskom will use the festive season to carry out aggressive maintenance work.
He said that the intention was to reduce the unplanned capacity losses and increase the performance of units so that more megawatts could be added to the grid to meet demand.
"When we do planned maintenance, it means we take units off the grid, reducing the ability to generate megawatts. That’s why we used the combination of low demand and healthy performance from these units during that period to not just do planned maintenance," he said.

Nxumalo said that the maintenance of the system is carried out on the basis of a so-called Life of Plant Plan.
He said that this time in 2022, the country was in phase five and six of load shedding, which means that diesel consumption in December 2023 is lower than in 2022.
Nxumalo advised the public to enjoy this period of no load shedding while it lasts.
