This was announced by party president Bantu Holomisa in Sandton, north of Joburg, on Thursday, 11 April.

Holomisa said a person of Mdwaba's calibre would be relied upon to lead the party in Gauteng and hopefully achieve good results in the May elections.

"His track record speaks for itself. We are excited to have someone on board who not only brings new energy, but also a lot of life, political and business experience," he said.

Mdwaba said he was taking up the role to offer an alternative for Gauteng residents.

He said he was not impressed by the current Premier of Gauteng, Panyaza Lesufi, and his popularity.

Said Mdwaba: "Gauteng is the most populous area in the country and has a budget of R165 billion. I think when you have a budget like that, which goes mainly to health and education, I don’t need to convince anyone that health and education in Gauteng are in a miserable state.”

He said the plan is to inform voters that it's not about who shouts the loudest, but content and what they bring.

"We need influence, we need people who understand how things are done. It's important to work with knowledge-based interventions," he said.

Mdwaba promised Gauteng residents that he'll address issues that affect them the most, which include education, health, water and skills development.

He said Gauteng has the largest population in the country and has the large portion of the budget, yet the money spent doesn’t reflect the budget.

He went on to say that his aim is to tackle problems in the townships, because he believes the province's economy depends mainly on the kasis.
