THE spokeswoman for the United Democratic Movement (UDM), Phathiwe Ndleleni, has resigned.

Ndleleni was recently welcomed into the party by the president of the movement, Bantu Holomisa, together with other new prominent members including Professor Mthunzi Perry-Mason Mdwaba.

"My immediate resignation from my role as head of media at the United Democratic Movement follows a deep reflection on several unresolved issues within the movement that significantly impact its integrity and my personal, professional ethics," said Ndleleni.

Ndleleni said her journey, which started in December 2023 and officially commenced with a public introduction on 19 February 2024, was undertaken with immense enthusiasm and a commitment to contribute positively to the movement's mission.

However, she finds herself forced to step down due to persistent challenges that have, regrettably, not been addressed despite repeated attempts.

She further said the core issues prompting her resignation include, among others, the lack of a formal contract and remuneration issues, recognition and representation in leadership positions, gender inequality and media attention-seeking behaviour by people who don't want to work the ground.

"Despite my full engagement and dedication to my duties, the absence of a formal contract and consistent oversight in my remuneration have been significant concerns. This oversight not only reflects a disregard for professional standards but also diminishes the value of trust and respect within the organisation," said Ndleleni.

"My efforts to extend the movement's influence across various provinces have not been met with the acknowledgement or the opportunity for advancement I had hoped for. This oversight has led me to question the movement's commitment to recognising and rewarding hard work and dedication impartially."

Ndleleni said that most top candidates and leadership positions are occupied by men, with minimal representation of women.

"This imbalance not only contradicts the principle of equality but also undermines the diverse and inclusive ethos that UDM professes to champion," she said.

Ndleleni said that while her decision to resign was made with a heavy heart, she believes it's necessary to uphold her personal and professional ethics.

"I hope this departure serves as a catalyst for reflection and positive change within UDM, encouraging a return to the principles of respect, integrity, and equality and I remain hopeful for the future of the movement and its potential to enact genuine, positive change," she said.

UDM secretary-general Yongama Zigebe said: "Yes, we received the resignation via WhatsApp. There's no further comment at this stage as we are considering the contents of her resignation. In due course, we will issue a statement."
