ROUGH Diamonds conducted a substance abuse prevention awareness campaign in Meadowlands, Soweto on Friday, 14 July.
Bennet Nxumalo of the Rough Diamonds told Daily Sun that their organisation works to empower young people.
"Our event was basically about educating people about drugs, especially nyaope, which most young people seem to have found comfort in. The Sanca people handed out information on how to rehabilitate," Bennet said.
He said that they are planning another event for Women's Day on Wednesday, 9 August to help young girls get away from addiction, adding that the theme of the upcoming event is "Women Against Drugs and Restoring Our Dignity".
Nxumalo said that the event was a success because it was supported by various partners and local NGOs.

"I am grateful for this event. It has helped me a lot and opened my eyes. I am ready to stop using nyaope completely. I want the best for my children," she said.
Ray Nxumalo told the recovering addicts who filled the hall that God loves them. He assured them that regardless of their situation, the Lord is in control, and they are all children of God. "Never stop praying and ask God to deliver you from your misery," he said.
