A DEMOCRATIC Alliance (DA) councillor has allegedly been arrested following a fatal house fire which claimed three of his family members.

According to the DA, their councillor Michael Buthelezi - who is allegedly the prime suspect in the arson case where his three children and wife died - has since been arrested.

On 29 October this year, Buthelezi's house burnt to ashes.

It was suspected that two explosives were allegedly thrown into Buthelezi’s house, which then resulted in the house burning down along with the family.

Buthelezi's wife and three children burnt to death while Buthelezi suffered burn wounds and was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

But the DA councillor was arrested on Monday, 18 December.

The DA KZN provincial leader Francois Rodgers said the DA in KZN has been informed of the arrest of Bergville councillor Buthelezi following the gruesome death of his family during a house fire.

"Shortly after I visited a severely injured Buthelezi in hospital and immediately reached out to the SAPS provincial top brass to urgently intervene in what, at the time, appeared to be another violent, senseless incident in KZN," he said.

He said following investigations, the DA provincial leader, Rodgers, had been informed by the SAPS provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-Genral Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, of Buthelezi’s arrest after he was a prime suspect in police investigations.

"The DA in the province has, before, called for a thorough probe in the matter and for those involved to be held accountable, regardless of affiliation. This is still our position and we further call for the law to take its course in this and other matters," he said.

He said the DA would now refer the matter to the party’s Federal Legal Commission (FLC).

When the KZN cops spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that a 48-year-old man was arrested in Ladysmith on Monday afternoon, 18 December.

"He will make an appearance in the Bergville Magistrates Court on Tuesday. He faces charges of murder and arson," he said.
