A POLICE officer who allegedly shot dead a Joburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officer outside a Braamfontein nightclub in June over a suspected love triangle has been arrested.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) arrested the member of the South African Police Services based in Parkview Visible Police (Vispol) for the murder of Sibusiso Zikalala of the JMPD.

A team of Ipid investigators arrested Constable Bongimpilo Nzuzu Bengu (28) on Tuesday, 31 October, following the incident which happened outside a club in Braamfontein.

Zikalala was shot and killed in front of his wife in the early hours of 26 June.

Ipid spokesman Robbie Raburabu said the incident allegedly happened after an altercation between Zikalala and Bengu.

"The suspect, Constable Bengu, was arrested on Tuesday and appeared in the Joburg Magistrates Court facing charges of murder where he was given R5000 bail with conditions.

"The proceedings are remanded to 25 January 2024 for further investigations," Raburabu said.

In the video that circulated on social media, Zikalala was seen holding a gun and threatening to assault Bengu, who was inside the white car. Zikalala was seen pulling Bengu out of the car and gunshots were fired, and in the blink of an eye, Zikalala was lying in a pool of blood.

He was working in the K9 unit, where they deal with high-profile cases which involve syndicates and drug-related matters.
