A CELLPHONE led cops to a man suspected of raping a gogo on Sunday, 27 November.

The gogo (85) was attacked at her home in Kgobokwane Village, outside Dennilton in Limpopo, after a man forcefully entered her home at around 12.30am.

The attacker, who wore a balaclava, was armed with a knife.

He raped the gogo before taking a wallet containing an undisclosed amount of cash.

The suspect (47) was arrested after being found in possession of a cellphone believed to belong to the gogo.

It’s alleged he took the gogo’s cellphone by mistake, thinking it was his own, before fleeing the scene.

He was tracked down and arrested at a house in the same village in the early hours of Tuesday morning, 6 December.

Limpopo police spokesman Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said during the arrest, police recovered the cellphone.

“The cellphone found in possession of the suspect will form part of the police investigation,” he said.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Mdutjana Magistrates Court soon on a charge of rape.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe vowed that the law would show no mercy to the perpetrator.

Hadebe said those responsible for gender-based violence should be locked up.

“We urge families and communities to look after the elderly, who are the most vulnerable people in society, to prevent these types of incidents from happening,” she said.
