A KZN matric pupil will not be able to finish her exams.

She had to stop writing after being admitted to hospital after an assault, allegedly by her schoolmates. The incident occurred earlier this month when the pupil (19) from Dloko Secondary School in Umlazi, south of Durban, was accused of stealing a cellphone. She’d written her Zulu paper and while going home, met a group of boys.

They questioned her about the phone, and allegedly took her to J section.

Then, at gunpoint, they demanded the phone and when she couldn’t give it to them, they allegedly beat her up with a sjambok.

She was badly injured and taken to Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital. Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube condemned the violence against women and children, and visited the pupil. About exams, she said: “The Department of Education will make arrangements for her next year”.
