AWETHU Njomane needs help with donations to buy an artificial leg.

The 25-year-old from Langa in Cape Town lost her leg in 2021 after she was shot and the leg had to be amputated.

She said she had accompanied a friend to a party in Samora Machel and they slept over afterwards. But when they were about to leave the following day, the friend said they should wait a little bit longer so they could eat first.

While they were sitting in the house, her friend's cousin entered while playing with a gun.

She said:

I told my friend to tell him not to play with the gun because I was scared. The moment I finished saying that, he pointed the gun at me and I started to cry. He then shot at my thigh and I started bleeding. I bled for two hours in the house.

Awethu was later taken to hospital where she stayed for six months in the intensive care unit. She said her mother only knew about the attack after three days.

“She never told my mother what happened. When my mother saw her, she asked where I was as we had gone to the same party, but she said she didn’t know,” said Awethu.

The friend’s mother later brought Awethu’s clothes to her mum and disclosed that she was injured in hospital.

After months in hospital, doctors decided to amputate Awethu's leg.

“That’s how I lost my leg. They killed my confidence. You’d think I’m confident enough to go out everyday, but I’m not. When I think about that day, I still hear the gunshot and have nightmares,” she said.

Awethu said that the friend never visited or spoke to her since she returned from hospital. Instead, she runs away when she sees Awethu.

Asked if she opened a case against her shooter, Awethu said before she could get justice, she learnt that her shooter was killed in a shooting in Samora Machel.

Awethu said the last time she inquired about an artificial leg, it cost between R85 000 and R100 000 and she wishes Good Samaritans can help her.

Her mother, Zanele (41) said the incident has killed her daughter from the inside.

“She used to cry every day, day and night, but she is now getting better. This incident hurt me because no one from that family ever came to ask for forgiveness for what happened,” she said.
