THE horrific death of Machaka Radebe, who was kidnapped and killed, prompted 17-year-olds Rhulani Mashaba and Rorisang Maretela to start an organisation that will address the spread of gender-based violence and kidnappings in Bloemfontein, Free State.
The Youth Revolution, NPA and other groups such as Buwa Mosadi, Thuthuzela, LifeLine and others embarked on a peaceful and dignified march in solidarity with the families who have lost loved ones.

So far, there have been roughly eight kidnappings of young people in Bloemfontein in the past two months.
According to the organisation's spokeswoman, Ayabulelwa Nkwakwa, the theme was black and attendees were asked to photograph the march in black and white.
"A system cannot fail those it was never designed to protect. Bloemfontein is shaken. Safety is a fundamental human right, not a privilege. We hope that the spirit continues until we all live in a safe society," said Ayabulelwa.
The group asked survivors such as Thati Thakali, Aya Nkwankwa and Lelentle Thole to speak out.
“The event demonstrated the power of kids to make a difference and help others and the group's logistics and march demonstrated their dedication to this cause,” she said.
The memorandum of demands was handed over to a representative of the premier.
Activist Tankiso Khuse said the Youth Revolution is demanding that SAPS and Metro police officers be more visible in townships as well as the deployment of the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) to probe the Free State situation.
Khuse also encouraged searches and visibility in high-risk locations such as Phase 9, Phase 6, Senekal, Koffiefontein and Rocklands, which are hotspots for these crimes.
“Consistent blockages at Bloemfontein's entrances and exits are also required. Gender-based violence campaigners must also be protected as formerly their lifeless bodies were discovered in dams and open spaces,” she said.
"The Premier's Office has been given 16 days to address the demands on the memorandum. We are confident that our sisters will be located, and that justice will be served for the loved ones we have lost."
