MZANSI schools officially reopened on Wednesday, 17 January, with some grade R kids still nervous and others happy to meet new pupils and to be in a different environment.
The little ones were crying, and others were wiping their tears as the teachers took them to their new classrooms, where they began their new journey and made new friends in the process.
Some of the grade R pupils from Sediba Sa Thuto Primary School in Mamelodi East, Tshwane, were crying on their first day at school.
Deborah Mashaba (5) couldn't hold back her tears at the assembly as she kept on crying.
Bobo Maila (45) said her daughter, Kelebogile Maila (5), had been telling her that she wanted to go to school, but now she was surprised when she started crying at school.
"My child is active and was excited on our way to school. I feel bad that she is crying," she said.
Bobo said all children must love school as it's the beginning of their journey in life.

School governing body chairman Simon Sengene said they are happy that children came in large numbers.
"We are happy with our classes even though they're containers," he said.
Simon said in the future, they want proper brick classrooms, adding that he's happy because the school drilled a borehole and water is no longer a problem for them.
City of Tshwane Mayor Cilliers Brink sent his best wishes to all the pupils who attended school for the 2024 academic year.
"This morning, I was one of many parents in the city who dropped off a grade 1 learner for their first day of school. I want to wish all the new learners who may be feeling nervous a wonderful first day," he said.
Brink also wished the matric class of 2023 the best of luck.
