ONE of the most prominent members of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) has withdrawn from the race for the presidency before the elective conference.
Sizophila Mkhize, known for her courage in tackling challenges head on, surprised many when she took an unexpected path. Mkhize, who had a good chance of becoming the league's first female president, withdrew herself from the race.
“I have not resigned as a member of the ANCYL. I have withdrawn my candidacy for ANCYL presidency. I will remain a member of the ANCYL for the next four years, but I will not be available to lead it at any level,” Mkhize said.
She said she joined the ANCYL at the age of 14 and it has been the centre of her political journey and growth.

Mkhize served in a task team assembled by the ANC, and she served as the ANCYL national spokeswoman. Currently, Mkhize is the youngest PEC member in KZN.
Mkhize said she believes that young people can take leadership roles in various structures.
"I've since made the decision not to make myself available for leadership of the ANCYL at the national level or any other level. I made this decision at the age of 30, with five years left as a member of the ANCYL. It's not nice to leave the ANCYL. It was our home and it made us the people we are today," Mkhize said.
She said even if she withdraws from the race, the unity of KZN is very important and she'll rally behind Thabiso Mngadi to be part of the ANCYL officials.
People on social media shared their views after Mkhize made the announcement.
David Mbhele wrote: "History will remember you for your bravery."
Nkanyiso Dlamini said: "Nothing is more difficult, and therefore more precious, than being able to decide for yourself. As much as your decision pains us, we have no choice but to support it."
The ANCYL elective conference was supposed to be held in April 2023,but due to unforeseen circumstances, it was postponed to June 2023.
