IT would be wrong of the South African Communist Party (SACP) to contest the 2024 general election on their own.

This view was expressed by the ANC general manager, Febe Potgieter, on Monday, 24 April.

She was addressing the media on the last day of the four-day National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni.

She said the alliance between the ANC, SACP and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) played an important role during the struggle for liberation in Mzansi and has been at the centre of a large range of sectors, which led the struggle for national liberation and shaped the vision for the democratic South Africa, captured in the Freedom Charter (1955).

"Our view is that it would very wrong for progressive and transformation project in the country because what it would do is to request ANC and SACP members to choose between mother and father when they hit difficult processes. It doesn’t work that way," said Potgieter.

Her comments come after the SACP’s Solly Mapaila threatened the ANC that the party would be contesting both national elections and by-elections should a consensus not be reached.

Potgieter said as instructed by ruling party’s 55th national conference, they would be focusing on ensuring there was unity within the alliance.

"The NEC reaffirms its commitment to the renewal and values of the alliance, and to a common programme of action that addresses issues of service delivery, unemployment, building safer communities, issues affecting the working class, and advancing the gains of our democracy and freedom," she said.

Potgieter said over the past 29 years of democracy, the alliance has rallied behind the ANC in election campaigns, partnered in joint programmes, as well as through the Alliance Secretariat and other structures.
