ARMED Durban Metro cops had to monitor the situation in the Durban CBD after ANC and uMkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party supporters exchanged heated words and threatened each other.
MK, backed by former ANC president Jacob Zuma, held a recruitment drive in the CBD on Wednesday, 24 January.
But the ANC had organised a clean-up campaign of the drug-ravaged area. These events unfolded around the same time, leading to chaos unfolding in parts of the CBD.
It's alleged that both party members exchanged heated words and allegedly swore at one another. Metro cops had to monitor the situation to make sure it didn't get out of hand.
When the ANC councillor of the ward, Protas Mngongoma was contacted by Daily Sun, he said they planned the cleaning campaign for the entire ward.

"When we walked past the area where the MK members held their programme, they saw us and started swearing at us," he said.
He said he thinks they were threatened by the fact that the ANC members were in a huge crowd while they, the MK, were just a small crowd.
He said they didn't respond to MK members because they're not hooligans like them.
Meanwhile, the MK denied swearing at ANC members.
MK member Senzo Shezi said they organised the recruitment drive before the ANC planned the cleaning campaign.
"We planned the programme and then posted it on social media. Two days before we held the programme, the ANC also announced the cleaning campaign. So, on the day, they came to the spot we were seated at and started swearing at us," he said.
None of the parties opened a case with the police.
