THE family of North West Umkhonto Wesizwe leader Napoleon Webster has spoken out about his near fatal accident.

They told Daily Sun they were grateful that he survived. The family spokesman and his son, Napoleon Blessing Webster, said his father suffered a broken spine, head injuries and a broken hand.

"He spent about two days unconscious in hospital. But by the grace of God, he is now awake and able to move his legs and fingers. We were worried that he might not be able to walk, but I believe he has a chance now," he said.

He said he didn't want to give the name of the hospital for his father’s safety. There are allegations that his accident was politically motivated as some members of MK are not happy that he was appointed party coordinator in the province ahead of their preferred person.

Napoleon junior said he was at home when his father left for a meeting on Friday, not on Sunday as previously reported.

"A few seconds later, I heard a loud bang and immediately ran outside to check. I saw that his car had been hit by a truck," he said.

He said he went to the scene to check on his father and found him trapped in the car, unconscious. He said he could not get any details about the truck because the driver sped off before he got there.

Napoleon junior said the only thing he noticed was that the truck was white and had a blue trailer. He said there was also a white car at the scene, but it also drove away before he could get closer.

"It breaks my heart that the truck driver did not stop to check on my father. If this accident had happened in a remote area, my father could probably have died because the driver didn't even check on him," he said.

He said luckily, there is a petrol station near his house and the CCTV camera captured the accident.

He said the footage had been handed over to police.

Napoleon junior claimed that the police haven't taken the statement from his dad because of his current condition.

"We hope the footage will help the police track down the driver and bring him to justice. He nearly took my father’s life. What shocked us as a family is that he did not stop when he realised what had happened.

"That's really worrying that someone can cause an accident and just drive off like that,” said Napoleon junior.
