THE old woman was happy when the construction of an RDP house began in her yard.
A construction company ordered her to quickly remove her mkhukhu to make way for a new RDP house.
A slab was built, but four years later, gogo Philistas Mtsweni (71), is still waiting for her RDP house to be completed. The concrete slab is still standing in her yard.
"Members of the community started teasing me and called the slab a grave. When I look at it, my heart breaks. I don't know what to do. I've lost all hope of ever living in a proper house. I'm stuck in a shack. I don't know how long," gogo Philistas said.
The gogo from Suncity Village, near Kwamhlanga, told the SunTeam that life in a shack is unbearable.

"I endure all kinds of weather conditions in this shack. When it rains, it pours, and I've never had a warm winter in my life. The slab is like a decoration in my yard. I still want a house like everyone else," she said.
Ward councillor Lucky Mtsweni said the construction of the RDP house will resume next month.
"I'm well aware of the incompleteness of the RDP house. I've made it my mission to ensure that the house is completed. We'll check whether it's still fit for purpose and if not, a new house will be built," he said.
Department of Human Settlements spokesman Freddy Ngobe said the department has cancelled the contractor's services that was appointed in 2020 due to poor performance.
"A new contractor has since been appointed to complete Gogo’s house. The entire project, which includes her house, is currently registered with the National Home Builders Registration Council for the works, including the house to be finalised," he said.
