RESIDENTS continue to go thirsty as reservoirs remain dry.

This is because four of Polokwane Municipality's six reservoirs in Limpopo have hit the 0% mark.

The municipality faces unprecedented challenges due to persistently high temperatures. This has led to significant water shortages in various parts of the municipal area.

Water levels in all municipal reservoirs have dropped to their lowest, with some even hitting the alarming 0% mark. It is reported that Ext 34 is at 0%, Potgieter at 0%, 50 Ml Krugersburg at 0%, 30 Ml Dome at 0% while 30 Ml Flat is at 4% and Seshego 10%.

The municipality is calling residents to use water sparingly, fix leaks promptly and limit outdoor water usage. However, this has rubbed Extension 71 residents up the wrong way.

They said it's been over a year without running water.

Christina Molele (56) said they no longer care about conserving water because they suffered even when the reservoirs were full.

“I no longer know the feeling of drinking tap water. All we get is water from tankers and sometimes it doesn’t smell good.

"We're told to conserve water, which water?” she asked.

Others claimed they last received constant water from their taps in February 2023.

“We've been surviving on water tankers all along. We would get water after we protest, and that lasts a few days. So, they shouldn't tell us to conserve water,” said resident, William Molelemane (33).

Municipal spokesman Thipa Selala said: “This doesn't affect specific areas, but the entire municipality. Some areas experience reduced water pressure, others, particularly upper areas, have no water at all.

“By working together and taking proactive measures, we can mitigate the impact of this water shortage and ensure that everyone in our municipality has access to an adequate water supply."
