A HEATED argument turned deadly on Friday 15 December.

This happened after a 37-year-old police officer, Sukani Khosa, allegedly fired shots randomly, killing one person and injuring three others.

The shocking incident took place in N'wadzekudzeku village in Giyani, Limpopo, on Friday, 15 December at around 00:30 am.

It is alleged that the police officer, who was stationed at the SAPS Mopani District Office, then went home and turned a gun on himself.

Limpopo police spokesman Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said police were alerted to the shooting incident, and on arrival they found four people with gunshot wounds.

Mashaba said one person was pronounced dead at the scene, while three others were taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.

"According to information, the 37-year-old had a heated argument with guests, including the deceased and his friends. He pulled out a firearm and fired several shots at them. Some customers tried to apprehend him, but he fired randomly and fled the scene," Mashaba said.

Mashaba said one of the patrons, identified as Smangaliso Hlungwani (26) from N'wadzekudzeku village, died at the scene.

Further investigations revealed that the suspect arrived at his home in the same village and turned a gun on himself, dying instantly.

"He has been identified as Sukani Page Khosa (37). A police sergeant attached to the SAPS Mopani District Office. Police investigations are still ongoing," Mashaba said.

Giyani police have opened a case of murder, triple attempted murder and an investigation.

Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant- General Thembi Hadebe said this was an unexpected incident where a police officer was the prime suspect instead of serving the communities during the festive season.

"Law enforcement officers should conduct themselves accordingly and act within and outside their duties within the law without being trigger-happy individuals," Hadebe said.

Hlungwani’s family members were not in a position to comment on the matter at this time.
