A man was arrested and charged with four counts of attempted murder.

A MAN accused of holding his wife and four children hostage made a brief appearance in the Germiston Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 6 March.

The accused also allegedly shot three cops and his wife's friend when the incident happened on 25 February.

The suspect is facing kidnapping, assault and attempted murder charges.

The husband's wife and her in-laws were in the court's gallery.

The suspect (38), who was wearing a black jacket and blue jeans, emerged from the holding cells, smiling and waved his hand to greet his family.

The suspect's lawyer, Advocate Sydney Khumalo, said the matter was postponed to get the victim's outstanding statements so the bail application could proceed at the next court sitting.

"The bail application will be processed on the next court date, and the state is opposed to bail," said Khumalo.

He said their instructions were to fight for his client to get bail.

"This is a Schedule 5 offence. I must show that the interest of justice permits that my client must get bail."

The suspect allegedly held his wife and four children hostage at his home in Klopperpark in Bedfordview Ekurhuleni on 25 February.

He allegedly shot and wounded three cops and his wife's female friend.

It's alleged that the suspect threatened his wife with a gun for more than two hours.

He was not asked to plead, and the case was postponed to 15 March for bail application.

According to Gauteng police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo, the suspect also shot his wife's female friend.

“A 38-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly shot and injured three police officers who responded to a hostage situation on Sunday, 25 February.

“The police received a complaint about a wife and children who were held hostage by the husband in Klopperpark, Bedfordview. On arrival, police found out that the suspect had fired shots at a family friend who was also in the house,” he said.

Masondo said the suspect has been charged with four counts of attempted murder.

“The SAPS hostage negotiator and the task team were summoned to the scene. The suspect released all the other victims and surrendered himself to the police. He was then arrested and charged with four counts of attempted murder, kidnapping, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm."

He added that the injured victims were hospitalised.

“The injured police officers and the family friend were taken to the nearest medical care centre where they are in serious but stable conditions,” he said.
