YOUTUBERS and influencers Rego and Modise Khoele have spoken about losing their first baby.
The married couple, also known as “Regodise”, was pregnant with their first baby in 2022 but had to terminate in the 14th week of the pregnancy due to the child developing cystic hygroma, which is an abnormal growth that usually appears on a baby's neck or head.
Rego (31) and Modise (31) shared their ordeal on YouTube.
They said when they went for their 12th week checkup, their gynaecologist was alarmed, and they had to visit different specialists to find out what was wrong.
“A sonographer told us that the baby has cystic hygroma, and she explained what it is. She said we should book another appointment with a fertility specialist. When we got there, the specialist made an in-depth scan. She made us understand what was going to happen, the processes, the chances and the options we had,” Rego said.
The couple were advised to keep the baby or terminate it, and they chose the latter.
“She mentioned that the first option is to continue with the pregnancy, but we run a high risk of the baby developing certain syndromes because of the chromosomal issues she was having. The other option was that the baby might not even make it through 26 weeks,” Modise said.

Rego told Daily Sun that people are ashamed of losing their babies.
“When we had to make the decision whether we should terminate or not, we had people supporting us and most of them had also gone through a similar thing. They also lost their babies. I realised there are lots of women who miscarry as well.
“And I realised it shouldn’t be a taboo. It shouldn’t be something people are ashamed of. It should be something you are joyful about, that you carried a child. It’s just that at this time, you didn’t carry full term. God will restore joy again,” she said.
To celebrate their daughter’s life, they pierced their ears.
“She was a baby girl, and we were going to pierce her ears. So, we pierced on her behalf and bought specific earrings that match, and we don’t take them off. We were very intentional about the type of earring we chose,” Modise said.
