GOSPEL musician Dr Kenny Makweng's memorial service is ongoing at the Akasia Community Hall north of Tshwane on Friday, 19 January.

The 54-year-old musician died on Monday, 15 January.

The musician from Dilwale in Mpumalanga suffered from a stroke on 30 December 2023.

He died at Witbank Hospital on Wednesday, 15 January, at about 6 pm.

Mynah Makweng-Kolobe, sister to the late Dr Kenny, said it's painful.

"He was active, always happy and surrounded by happy people. He was a Christian. We are not coping but getting there even though it's still hard."

She was reserved and loved to socialise with people.

Gospel singer Jan Lebese, the leader of Stimamollo Gospel Group, said it was hard to accept the loss of Dr Kenny.

"It was painful to hear the sad news. We had plans with him this year. We were planning to collaborate with him," he said.

"He was like a brother to me. I still listen to his music."

Jan said traditional gospel music had lost a lot.

"We were exchanging our talents in music. We will always remember him."

Gospel singer Caiphus "Tau Diarora" Khosa said they were with Dr Kenny at Worship House studio in November, recording the Survivors group.

He said that he didn't complain about any sickness, and the community even celebrated us by killing a goat for us.

"I was shocked about his death and slept the whole day. I have worked with him for over 10 years."

He said he would remember him with his beautiful songs.

The memorial service was delayed because of load shedding, scheduled to start at noon.

He is survived by six siblings and other family members.

His funeral service will be at Digwale and he'll be buried at Keerom Cemetery in Limpopo on Sunday, 21 January.
