THE life of the late Ukhozi FM presenter Bheka "Beekay" Mchunu was celebrated at SABC Durban M1 studios on Friday, 15 March.

Beekay died on Tuesday, 12 March, at age 45.

His brother Sfiso Mchunu told Daily Sun that Bheka died while being rushed to the hospital after he had complained of something in his chest.

Sfiso acknowledged the people he was close with and gave gratitude to UKhozi FM for hosting the memorial service.

“We are gathered because of my brother's passing, which happened unexpectedly and at a young age. There's a lot he did for us as a family.

"We've lost a leader. To the team that worked with Beekay, we are with you. We wish you well to find someone who will try to match Beekay," Sfiso said.

Former colleagues remembered Beekay as a hardworking individual who respected his craft, full of jokes and a peaceful man.

Nonhlanhla "Mdonso" Ngcobo, who was the producer of Sigiya Ngengoma, said she did not anticipate that she'd be standing at the podium and talking about him.

“We worked peacefully with Beekay. It was nice working with him. He had love. He had jokes. Beekay liked to help people. I feel sorry for the young ones who never got a chance to listen to his shows because they could have learnt a lot," she said.

Former colleague Khathide “Tshatha” Ngobe said he met Beekay through Linda Sibiya, who was his best friend at the time, and they got along just fine.

“To talk about Beekay is difficult. It's not easy because he was a peaceful man. He was always laughing.

"I once asked my colleagues if they ever saw Beekay angry about something, and everybody said no," Tshatha said.

Beekay joined Ukhozi FM in 2011 and worked on shows such as Sibhukuda Kwesimanzonzo, Sithakela Isizwe, Kanye Nawe, Itende Lomcimbi, as well as Sigiya Ngengoma.

On Saturday from noon to 3 pm, Ukhozi FM will host a special show to celebrate Bheka's life.

Beekay's funeral will be at Phesheya Primary School, Ngwelezane, Empangeni on Sunday, 17 March, at 9am.
