CANCER survivors will be celebrated through dance at the Dancing Out Of Cancer event on 29 October.

The showcase will be held at the Soweto Theatre and dancer, choreographer and cancer survivor Nomsa Manaka will be leading it.

Nomsa (57), who beat cancer twice, said the show will be for both celebrating survivors and raising funds for those who are still fighting cancer.

“I will be honouring cancer survivors in the compelling traditional, urban, and African contemporary dance showcase. I’m looking forward to celebrating caregivers and cancer survivors while, at the same time, giving hope to cancer patients. This symbolic event sets to highlight the importance of improving our ability to address the unique needs of cancer patients and survivors, and how we can make faster progress if we work together, across all of society in improving their quality of life,” she said.

The concept of Dancing Out Of Cancer was inspired by her son.

“In 2016, I was diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer and as I was sleeping on my deathbed, my son Mak (Manaka) suggested that I must write a book called Dancing out of Cancer and from that moment onwards, I never stopped thinking about that powerful title.

“It was that conversation that inspired me to continue to fight for my life. I kept thinking to myself, when I leave this hospital bed, the first thing I'd do is dance. And I think that’s what healed me at the time,” she said.

Nomsa said there will be performances from some of the country’s big musicians.

“In this third edition, the audience can expect to be entertained by some of Mzansi’s finest musicians from Maleh, to Tshedi, Billy Monama, Omega, and Ayanda Khumalo. The musicians will be backed up by the Hugh Masekela Band.

“The programme will also include a special slot of poetry which will be performed by Tsoana Nhlapo, Amantle Makhutle, not forgetting my son, Mak Manaka. I’m looking forward to celebrating caregivers and cancer survivors while, at the same time, giving hope to cancer patients,” Nomsa said.
