ICONIC actor, producer and director Phillip Hlophe (56) has died.

Bra Phil, as he was passionately known by industry mates, died at his home in Soweto on Friday, 7 October.

He worked on shows such as Yizo Yizo, Isibaya, Love Lives Here and Masterchef South Africa.

Zola Hashatsi, the family spokesman, confirmed his death to Daily Sun.

“Hashatsi Productions management would like to publicly confirm the news of his passing. He took his last breath on Friday, the 7th of October 2023. He is a celebrated thespian in the arts and has played a pivotal role as an actor, director, 1st AD, floor manager and all-rounder. He cared for the arts and made us feel at home on set. To say he was kind is an understatement.

“He will artistically be dearly missed, and the family humbly asks you to give them space in this time of mourning,” he said.

His memorial service will be on Wednesday, 11 October at the Soweto Theatre in Jabulani.

Bra Phil will be laid to rest on Saturday, 14 October at West Park Cemetery, Joburg.

Actors and actresses shared their tributes and showed Bra Phil some live on social media.

Actress and TV personality Minnie Dlamini said he always assisted her.

“My heart is completely shattered. Bra Phil has worked on almost all the awards shows that I’ve hosted. My very first one he decided he wasn’t going to leave my side, (waaaaay below his pay grade) but he saw how young and frightened I was and took it upon himself to make sure I had the confidence I needed to be my best self.

“You brought such life, fun and wisdom to every set. You gave me so much direction on that film set that I will always be grateful for, will hold close and use in your honour. The impact you made in shaping this industry and the people in it will never be forgotten by us. We love you so much, Baba wethu. My deepest condolences to the family, sending strength to you all during this time,” she wrote.

Actress Sihle Ndaba said: “Dr Phil was the best to ever do it. An absolute joy to work with. A consummate professional. My heart breaks for his family and friends.”

Radio presenter Zizo Tshwete said she’s got love and respect for him.

“The absolute deepest love and respect for Bra Phil! I can immediately think of his warm smile,” she said.
