POLITICIAN and author Mmusi Maimane shocked South Africans on Saturday, 8 July.
This after he was revealed as The Warrior on The Masked Singer, showing off that he can sing.
The former Democratic Alliance (DA) leader who's recently launched his new party, Build One South Africa, has been part of the SABC3 singing competition since the first week.
In his first week, he sang Musa Sukwene and Robbie Malinga’s Mthande, shocking the judges with his voice.
On Saturday, he sang Easy by The Commodores and when he was voted out at the end of the episode, viewers on social media were shocked to see him behind the mask.
“My wife, kids and I watch the American version of The Masked Singer and my kids enjoy it. Plus, I’m always challenging my kids and telling them they should do things that are uncomfortable and haven’t done before.
“So, when the invitation came, I reluctantly and gladly agreed. I was reluctant because I had to test my singing and dancing skills. But I’m glad I did it and my kids loved it. They saw their dad doing something that’s out of his comfort zone,” he said.

Mmusi said his children didn’t even know who Warrior was and were shocked when they saw the reveal.
“We signed a non-disclosure agreement, so I couldn’t even tell them. I wanted to surprise them and they really were when they saw the reveal. I was tempted to post the video of the unmasking to show how shocked they were, but we don’t put our kids on social media. It was worth it because they got to see their dad in a different light,” the proud dad said.
He said the prepping for the performances took time.
“So, the prep was learning the words, keeping the tune and the dancing came down to what you do on the microphone.
“When you put on a mask and people don’t know who you are, you are willing to do things you wouldn’t be willing to do. It was a fun experience and I wanted to do something fun. Often people associate us with serious things. Sometimes fun things are part of our way to keep the conversation going with people,” he said.
The show is singing competition in which celebrities compete against each other while wearing over-the-top costumes with full-face masks to hide their identities. The show features media personality Somizi Mhlongo, comedian Skhumba Hlophe, singer J Something and DJ Sithelo Shozi as the judges. It is hosted by comedian Mpho Popps and produced by Anele Mdoda.
