LEGENDARY Jazz musician Selaelo Selota said he grew up without love from a father figure, and that made him realise how important love was.
The 58-year-old Thrrr... Phaaa! hitmaker told Daily Sun that love is important in one’s life, especially the love of a parent.
“I struggled with love from the time I was young. When I grew up, I didn’t know my father, and I didn’t have full parental care,” he said.
He said at some point, his mum married, and he was left with his gogo.
“It was a hard upbringing, to be told by an aunt that I wasn’t someone’s son,” he said.
He said his childhood showed him that he needed to be different.
“In the beginning, I didn’t have it around me. But today, I know that expressing love to my children and showing fellow human beings that you care about them and express that human love has healed a lot of people,” he said.

He said he also has people whose love heals him.
“When I see that this person cares and loves me, that's the spirit of brotherhood. When I came to Joburg, I didn’t have a place to stay because I was coming back from the mines. But there are people I met here who I didn’t know, and they took me to their homes,” he said.
He said he experienced people who loved him and who didn’t.
“I now know the difference between love and hate,” he said.
Selaelo said he will release his brand-new album called Pelong.
“Pelong is my new album. I kind of made it around love in all its aspects. For instance, the opening song is called Great Grandma’s Memories. The melody is what my great-grandmother used to sing that song for me because I always stayed at home with her,” he said.
He said he was tracing back how love held him together.
