THE road to the crowning of the final South African Idol is getting closer.

On Saturday night, 16 September the top 8 was announced as Lungelo got eliminated from the singing competition.

The live show took place in Fairlands, Joburg.

The top 9 opened the show with a performance of amapiano Abalele by Ami Faku and Kabza De Small.

Big Zulu and Sjava graced the show with a performance of their new song, Sayona.

This week’s theme was the songbook of American singer-songwriter and record producer, Lionel Richie, and the first to perform was Thando with a rendition of Love oh love.

Somizi said he enjoyed it.

Thembi said she felt her body shaking, and JR said the energy was there, but he had to focus on his vocal control.

Sena entered the top 8, singing Lionel Richie’s 1983 single, You Are.

Thembi said she enjoyed seeing her confidence grow, and JR said it sounded like listening to a song on a streaming service.

Somizi said the performance was "flee marketi".

"It was a very neighbourly market, we drink, and we don’t care about you. You performed as if you were underpaid. It was not a performance that qualifies for a million rand," he said.

Next was Envic singing I call it love from Lionel Richie’s 8th studio album.

JR said it was a great performance, and Somizi said he is naturally seasoned.

Following was Niikiey singing Easy by the Commodores.

Somizi said she is silly, and Thembi said she enjoyed the performance.

JR said she showed that you don’t have to know a song and she will introduce a song.

Next to be announced into the top 8 was Thabo, who did a rendition of We Are The World by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, receiving a standing ovation from all judges.

Thembi said they have a star.

"I see the passion I see that you are working," she said.

JR said he was doing nothing wrong.

Somizi said he didn't sing but was a minister and he gave him a Whooo Shame.

Following to join the stage was Princess, who sang Just Go by Akon and Lionel Richie.

JR said he was hoping she would make him love the song since he didn’t know it.

"I struggled to connect with the song," she said.

Somizi said the song was ugly, but it wasn’t her fault.

"Your vocals were on point and as the song went on, I fell in love with it," he said.

Next in the top 8 was Nkosi, who sang Ballerina Girl.

Somizi said he had something very special about him, and Thembi said the song was perfect for him.

JR said the performance was brilliant.

Faith ended the show with Lionel’s Lover Penny.

Thembi said he was a real charmer.

"You know you have the looks, but the cherry on top is that you are comfortable in the song," she said.

JR said he was a gentleman.

"I hope to see you at Showstopper," he said.

Somizi said he was now a fan.
