Sparks Wezinto said life has been better since he started singing gqom.

GQOM musician Mandla "Sparks Wezinto" Xulu (35) sees light at the end of the tunnel.

Sparks, who is from Empangeni in KZN, has been struggling in the music industry since 2005 when he started as a kwaito singer.

However, since he ventured into gqom in 2020, he is enjoying a lot of airplay and is getting bookings.

Sparks is preparing to release his new single titled Dlala nomalume. The song features Mr Vibe, who plays detective Nyawo on Uzalo and Ngozi SA.

He told SunBuzz that even though he loves muisc, he has learnt that it’s not easy in the entertainment industry.

“Things seem to be coming together in my music career. I have struggled for a long time and I’ve learnt that in music, I need to have a side job to keep me going.

“Producing music is too expensive because you have to hire a studio, pay for producers and at the end of the day, the money doesn’t come back,” he said.

He said in 2020 he released his debut gqom single titled Ayiqale iParty and in 2022, he released his second song titled Tuka featuring kwaito star Bhah.

“After releasing this single, I'm seeing light at the end of the tunnel because top radio stations including Ukhozi FM, Gagasi FM, and Ligwalagwala are playing my songs,” he said.

"Now I am also getting bookings like never before and I’m grateful for that."

Sparks was a member of kwaito group Ghettos and studied sound engineering at Maltre Productions.
