LIFE had been hard for surviving 3Sum member, Amstel Maboa as he had to navigate life without his best friends.
He has spent the past few years picking himself up after losing Koyo Bala and Jeff Moyo, with whom he sang for 3Sum.
The trio was inseparable. They were one of the most popular stars in the 2000s until the two died in 2016 and 2010, respectively.
Amstel fell into depression and stopped doing music.
In the past years, he started picking himself up and getting back on his feet.
In 2021, he returned to the music industry and started releasing music. Now, he’s ventured into business.
Amstel has launched his new restaurant called Dijong Tsa Amstel in Mamelodi, Tshwane.

He spoke to Daily Sun about the new business venture.
“Having witnessed my mum's lifelong love for cooking, I've learned valuable lessons over the years. So, with time, I've developed my unique cooking style. I use those skills for this new business, but because mum knows best and taught me, I use the skills I’ve learnt in the kitchen and incorporate some of her secret ingredients.
"I started this business because I felt like it was time to I apply my knowledge and explore the culinary realm,” he said.
However, his new venture won’t stop the singer and dancer from performing.
“We're currently open from Monday to Saturday. In the future, I'll open on Sundays as well. When I get bookings to perform, I'm sure my mum will cook some food with flavour and deliver the best service to my clients. Plus, I have enough professional staff working for me, so bookings won't affect my business.
“I'll leave the business in my mum’s hand. I know the customers won’t tell the difference in her cooking,” he said.
Amstel said he’s been trying to build the business for years.
“I've always loved cooking. I'm the type who's always looking for new recipes to try out. I enjoy experimenting with food.
“The aim is to grow this into a carwash. It must be a full experience where people come and chill while enjoying tasty, delicious food.”
