IT'S been a great year for choreographer Tom London and his dance crew, Soweto’s Finest.
The group of Tom, Njabulo “Njabz” Mahlaba and Thando Nkosi faced financial difficulties and the possibility of closing their dance studio in Newtown Junction Mall, Joburg, in 2021.
But all that is behind them now.
At the time, Tom, leader of the group from Protea Glen in Soweto, told Daily Sun it was because of Covid-19.
“When Covid-19 hit, we couldn’t open the studio and we also couldn’t go and perform so money was not coming in. And for the past three months, our rent is in arrears and the landlord is on our necks, they need the rent,” he said.
Speaking to Daily Sun now, Tom said they are back on their feet despite the lack of sponsors.
“In terms of the dance studio, we're consistently filling up the mall and mentoring younger dancers, teaching them the art of dance and instilling professionalism in them. Despite lacking sponsors, we've managed to keep the lights on, pay the rent, and give back to the community,” he said.

They are also planning on opening another dance studio soon.
“Looking to next year, we hope to open a second dance studio and are actively seeking sponsors to support this endeavour.
“Reflecting on the year's achievements, my focus now shifts to the Soweto’s Finest Dance Studio Festival scheduled for February next year. We're planning to make it a grand event. The goal is to continue the momentum into the next year and beyond,” Tom said.
Things are also looking up for Tom, individually, as he’s been choreographing many big events in the country.
“Business has been amazing. I'm blessed. One of the defining moments was the popularity of the Tom London song in the industry and by the public. Their love and support reminded me of my identity and the impact I've had on the industry."
“Another significant milestone was the opportunity to choreograph for the Metro FM Awards. Despite the limited time, I thrived under pressure and delivered an amazing show. I also had the privilege of choreographing for the South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas), which became special when a client praised it as my best work yet. Such compliments move me and strengthen my dedication,” the dancer said.
