THEY have been making Mzansi dance for 25 years and they’re still going strong.
Nhlanhla Mafu (44) and Theo Kgosinkwe (49) of award-winning Afro pop duo Mafikizolo recently celebrated their 25th birthday.
The duo, known for hits such as Emlanjeni, Mas’thokoze, Nisixoshelani and Khona, said they could not believe it had been this long.
Speaking about reaching such a milestone, Nhlanhla said they were blessed.
“Being 25 feels amazing. It feels unbelievable because when we started out, we never thought that 25 years later, we would still be here. It feels amazing and humbling,” she said.
Theo confessed that he initially didn’t want to be a singer.

“All I wanted to do was to be a songwriter. I then met Nhlanhla and we talked about the idea of starting a band because I really wanted to write for a group. From there, I just went with the flow and now I am here. I’m enjoying it and loving it,” he said.
Theo said they didn’t see themselves as celebrities.
“We only remember that we are celebrated people when someone wants to take a picture but we are normal people.
“When we started out, our parents never saw us as celebrities. They would send us to buy bread and tomatoes while we were on TV. They taught us to be very humble and never to let fame go to our heads,” he said.
“We still stay humble. People always ask why Mafikizolo is still going and I tell them it’s because of our humility.”
The duo will celebrate 25 years with a tour of seven provinces.
The group will drop a new album, Idwala, on 26 August. It will feature the likes of Sjava, Sun-El Musician, Ami Faku and Mondli Ngcobo.
